Introduction
Community Business is pleased to launch 'Towards Disability Confidence - A Resource Guide for Employers in Hong Kong and Singapore' and an accompanying Online Toolkit. This Resource Guide has been published to encourage and support companies in Asia - particularly those in Hong Kong and Singapore - to address the subject of 'disability'. It looks at the business case, the cultural context in Hong Kong and Singapore, and provides recommendations on steps companies should take to allow people with disabilities to contribute - both as employees and customers.
This Resource Guide is sponsored by American Express and eight other member companies of Community Business' Diversity & Inclusion in Asia Network (DIAN) - a group of leading companies committed to progressing the discussion of diversity in Asia and driving the adoption of best practice policies and practices in the workplace. The publication explores the context of disability in Hong Kong and Singapore and outlines why and how companies in Asia can take steps to become 'disability confident' - building their capability to employ and do business with disabled people.
Sonia Cargan, Vice President of Human Resources, Greater China, South East Asia & Japan at American Express: "Becoming a Disability Confident organisation is a global priority for American Express. Raising our levels of awareness and taking pro-active steps to drive this agenda forward will enable us to attract and retain a broader talent pool and enhance our ability to deliver superior service to our customers. This new Resource Guide from Community Business is a valuable tool to help organisations get started with taking action and engage in this important dialogue."
In this Resource Guide, Community Business calls upon companies to move beyond philanthropic gestures or the fulfillment of employment quotas and to take a more strategic and holistic approach to addressing the needs of people with disabilities. Drawing on both local and international best practice, the research sets out a set of recommendations for companies looking to build 'disability confidence' and is illustrated with case studies from Hong Kong and Singapore.
