DIAN India Insight Series - 2: Supreme Court's Ruling on S377 - An Obstacle to LGBT Inclusion in India or an Opportunity?

After a period of growing openness and acceptance of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in India, the Supreme Court's decision on 11 December 2013 to reinstate Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, thereby recriminalising homosexuality, shocked not just India, but the world. The aftermath of this decision has been far-reaching - creating a climate of uncertainty and fear and stalling efforts to promote a more inclusive society. But with a greater spotlight on this issue and more public and private debate, has the impact been all bad? How has the ruling impacted corporate efforts to promote LGBT inclusion? As a champion of responsible and inclusive business and a thought leader on diversity and inclusion in Asia, Community Business was keen to explore the issue - with a view to understanding how companies committed to diversity and inclusion should respond in the current climate.
