How We Collect & Analyse Data

This online resource analyses the representation of women on the boards of the companies listed on the Hang Seng Index (HSI).

The HSI is a free float-adjusted market capitalisation-weighted stock market index in Hong Kong. It includes the largest and most liquid stocks listed on the Main Board of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong. It is used to record and monitor daily changes of the largest companies of the Hong Kong stock market and is the main indicator of the overall market performance in Hong Kong.

In collating the data for this research, Community Business has adopted a consistent methodology to previous years:

  • Data is collected from David M. Webb’s proprietary database Webb-site.com on a quarterly basis and analysed by Community Business.
  • Information related to the representation of women on boards in other jurisdictions has been obtained from official sources.
  • To gain a more holistic view beyond gender representation on boards, we may also look at qualitative information on company websites or annual reports, such as the published board diversity policies of each company, its board nomination practices, as well as programmes and initiatives that support the advancement of women within the company.
